Operasonic created the Lysaght Musical as part of Loving the Lysaght, a community project run by Linc Cymru and funded through the Heritage Lottery Fund. The project worked with the local community to build a picture of the history of the Lysaght Institute Newport, through stories, workshops, events and research.  From 1928 when the Lysaght Institute first opened its doors until today, the venue has created memories for Newport for over 90 years.

Music pupils from Lliswerry High School, working with composer Richard Barnard and director Kate Willetts, created seven beautiful songs about the Lysaght Institute across the ages: exploring the music and memories of the building of the Institute the 1920’s; dancing with GI’s in the 1930’s; discos and parties in the 1970’s; the building derelict at the turn of the century; new life as the building is used again today.

We were unable to bring pupils together in the Lysaght to perform the final musical as planned. Instead we worked across lockdown to create this virtual musical performed by local community singers and young people and created in collaboration with C.O.B.R.A Studios.

Creodd Operasonic y Lysaght Musical fel rhan o Loving the Lysaght, prosiect cymunedol sy’n cael ei redeg gan Linc Cymru a’i ariannu trwy’r Gronfa Dreftadaeth Loteri. Gweithiodd y prosiect gyda’r gymuned leol i adeiladu darlun o hanes Sefydliad Lysaght Casnewydd, trwy straeon, gweithdai, digwyddiadau ac ymchwil. O 1928 pan agorodd Sefydliad Lysaght ei ddrysau gyntaf tan heddiw, mae’r lleoliad wedi creu atgofion i Casnewydd ers dros 90 mlynedd.

Creodd disgyblion cerdd o Ysgol Uwchradd Lliswerry, gan weithio gyda’r cyfansoddwr Richard Barnard a’r cyfarwyddwr Kate Willetts, saith cân hyfryd am Sefydliad Lysaght ar draws yr oesoedd: archwilio cerddoriaeth ac atgofion adeilad yr Athrofa y 1920’au; dawnsio gyda GI’s yn y 1930’au; disgos a phartïon yn y 1970au; yr adeilad yn ddiffaith ar droad y ganrif; bywyd newydd wrth i’r adeilad gael ei ddefnyddio eto heddiw.

Nid oeddem yn gallu dod â disgyblion ynghyd yn y Lysaght i berfformio’r sioe gerdd olaf fel y cynlluniwyd. Yn lle buom yn gweithio ar draws cloi i greu’r rhith-sioe gerdd hon a berfformiwyd gan gantorion cymunedol lleol a phobl ifanc a’i chreu mewn cydweithrediad â C.O.B.R.A Studios.
